What to see in Modica
Planning a trip to the extraordinary, chocolate-scented city of Modica? Acquaduci is your perfectly located Modica holiday rental house Sicily base, offering tranquil seafront comfort for exploring all the marvels of the Val di Noto.
1 – Duomo di San Giorgio
It is considered one of the most impressive Baroque places of worship in all of Sicily, and perhaps it could be. The 250 steps leading up to the entrance undoubtedly contribute to its majestic appearance, but its 62 meters of height certainly make it impossible to go unnoticed. The façade is a warm golden hue, typical of Sicilian Baroque style, and the monument has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

2 – Pizzo Belvedere
Both Modica Alta and Modica Bassa are rich in beauty, even in the simplest details. But I’ll never tire of saying that the true essence of Modica is its views. Climbing any of the steps flanking the Cathedral of San Giorgio, you’ll reach Pizzo Belvedere: a panoramic terrace overlooking the rooftops of Modica Alta, but also affording glimpses of Modica Bassa.

3 – Castle of the Counts of Modica
Perched atop a rocky outcrop, the Castello dei Conti dominates the city. This medieval castle offers a glimpse into the history of medieval Modica before the earthquake that destroyed much of it in 1693. It’s accessible on foot, but before venturing up the hill, I recommend checking the opening hours
on this website.

4 – Salvatore Quasimodo’s Birthplace
Of Sicilian origins, writer Salvatore Quasimodo was born in Modica. A must-do in Modica for admirers of the poet is to visit his birthplace: during your visit, you’ll admire the original furnishings and an evocative vintage typewriter. What makes the visit even more immersive is the poet’s voice reciting some of his verses. I suggest you visit the
official website
to find up-to-date opening hours and prices.
5 – the chocolate museum
This isn’t just any chocolate museum, but the Chocolate Museum of Modica. It’s important to understand why the chocolate you’ll eat here is very different from traditional chocolate. It’s cold-processed to ensure the sugar remains granular. This chocolate doesn’t melt in your mouth, but crumbles. That’s the real difference! It’s also available in different flavors, such as cinnamon, chili pepper, or even wine. Inside the Chocolate Museum, you can discover the origins of Modica’s chocolate, enjoy some free samples, and admire a large chocolate sculpture measuring approximately 9 meters tall. As they say: “Look, but don’t lick!” Really? In the dedicated workshop, you can even watch it being made.
Tickets cost €3, but consider whether it’s worth it for yourself, as it takes very little time to visit. Visit the municipality website for more information.
