What to see in Noto, a baroque city

1 – Porta Reale
Entering the historic center of Noto through the Porta Reale is the best way to receive a warm welcome to this town. After crossing a tree-lined avenue you cannot help but notice the Royal Gate
2 – Monastery of the S.S. and Church of San Francesco d’Assisi
Not far from the Royal Gate, on the right you will notice a recently restored building. I suggest you climb the steps leading up to it and enter the basilica: here you can admire the church with one of the most beautiful interiors in Noto, rich in frescoes and decorations.
3 – Cathedral Basilica of St. Nicholas
Strolling along Corso Vittorio Emanuele you’ll see many palaces and churches, but when you arrive in front of Noto Cathedral, you’ll have no doubt that you’re in the right place. The warm colors of its walls, the wide staircase that precedes it and its dominant position will certainly not go unnoticed before your eyes.
4 – Ducezio Palace
You can admire the Palazzo Ducezio as you exit the Cathedral. This structure, in fact, is located right in front of the Basilica of San Nicolò.
5 – Town Hall Square
Located halfway along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Piazza del Municipio is not named by chance: it is exactly where the Cathedral and Palazzo Ducezio stand, as well as Palazzo Landolina and, not far away, one of the best pastry shops in the city: Caffè Costanzo.
6 – Noto Flower Festival
A few streets further on, you’ll see the street carpeted (literally) with incredible works made simply with flowers, but remember that this festival only takes place annually for 5 days in the month of May.
7 – Church of San Domenico
This church, preceded by a small but very pleasant garden, is considered one of the most refined Baroque buildings in the city.
8 – Tina Di Lorenzo Theater
One of Noto’s noteworthy gems (yes, the pun is definitely there) is the Tina Di Lorenzo Theater. The exterior of the building is not as impressive as its interior: the finely decorated ceilings, balconies and deep red curtains have remained almost intact since its construction in the 19th century.
