1 – Ortigia

The beauty of this island is disarming: its shape, its baroque buildings, its narrow streets, its bars and squares, and the atmosphere that pervades it at any time of day, make it easy to understand why it is loved by so many.
The first thing to do in Syracuse is to take a lovely stroll around Ortigia, admiring the surrounding sea and letting the breeze ruffle your hair. You can do it independently, booking a guided walking tour or admiring Ortigia from the sea on a boat tour.

2 – The Cathedral Square – Ortigia

Walking through the narrow, almost labyrinthine alleys of Ortigia, you might be surprised when Piazza del Duomo opens up before your eyes. It is no coincidence that this place extends where space had been carved out for the acropolis of Syracuse, the largest city in the ancient world (even larger than Athens).

3 – The Cathedral of Syracuse

It is the most prominent building in Piazza del Duomo and, most likely, in all of Syracuse. Admire its beauty and exterior details, but don’t forget to climb the few steps that precede it and cross its entrance. Inside, you can easily distinguish some very particular Doric columns, which you certainly wouldn’t expect to find in a place of worship of this caliber. You should know, in fact, that the current cathedral was built using the skeleton of the temple of Athena.

4 – Maniace Castle

The only way to reach the very tip of the island of Ortigia is to cross the gates of Castello Maniace. This structure perfectly embodies the city’s glittering past: enter to admire the vaulted ceilings, stroll while gazing out to sea, and see with your own eyes the artifacts such as majolica and ceramics that have been discovered.

5 – The Jewish Quarter

Strolling through the alleys of Syracuse is even more pleasant in the evening, when the streetlights come on and the bars line the streets with tables. One neighborhood, however, stands out above all the others: if you’re looking for a nice little place to dine, I suggest you do so in the beautiful Jewish Quarter.
