🚢 Malta in 24 Hours: Our Pocket Guide for a Getaway from Acquaduci (Guaranteed Return Included!)

aliscafo pozzallo malta

Hello Friends of Acquaduci! We are Vincenzo and my Agnese. We are always looking for ways to make your holiday here with us unforgettable, and one of the most frequent questions you ask us is: “How easy is it to get to Malta from Pozzallo?”

Well, the answer is simple: very easy!

We want to give you a mini-guide for an exciting one-night “getaway,” a 24-36 hour adventure that will let you discover the pearl of the Mediterranean, Malta, with the comfort of returning to your cozy Acquaduci apartment afterward. Imagine: sea, history, another island… all in the blink of an eye!

⚓️ The Fast Connection: Pozzallo – Valletta

The real secret of our area is the strategic proximity to the port of Pozzallo. From here, a rapid catamaran service connects Sicily directly with Valletta, the capital of Malta.

  • Who Travels: The main company is Virtu Ferries.
  • How Long: The journey is incredibly fast, lasting about one hour and 45 minutes. You are on the open sea, but time flies!
  • Frequency and Times (Our Advice): In high season (especially from May to September), connections are frequent. To make the most of your time, we recommend taking the early morning catamaran (e.g., 6:30 or 7:00 AM) on the day of departure, to land in Malta before 9:00 AM. This gives you a full day to explore!
  • Logistics from Acquaduci: The port of Pozzallo is just a few minutes drive from our apartment. You can leave your car comfortably parked here at Acquaduci and take a taxi or shuttle service to the port. It’s the most stress-free solution!

Agnese’s Tip: “Book your tickets online well in advance, especially if you are traveling on summer weekends. The best seats (maybe near the window!) are snapped up, and prices are definitely more affordable if you don’t wait until the last minute!”

🌙 Where to Sleep for One Night (The Perfect Solution)

Since you will only have one night, our recommendation is to choose accommodation that allows you to be immediately in the heart of the action.

  1. Valletta: Sleeping here is ideal. You will wake up right within the historic walls, ready to start your day of exploration without wasting time on transfers. There are many charming boutique hotels and characteristic guesthouses.
  2. Sliema/St. Julian’s: If you prefer a more modern atmosphere, with shopping centers, restaurants, and nightlife, these areas are perfect. They are connected to Valletta by a convenient and short ferry ride.

☀️ Your Perfect Day in Malta: 24-Hour Itinerary

Upon arrival at the port of Valletta, your step counter will be ready to log miles! Malta is pure history, and even if only for a day, it will leave you with indelible memories.

Stop 1 (Morning: History and Architecture)

  • Valletta (The Elegant Capital): As soon as you disembark, you will feel enveloped in a unique atmosphere. Get lost in the narrow streets that open up to breathtaking views. Don’t miss:
    • St. John’s Co-Cathedral: A Baroque masterpiece, inside which is Caravaggio’s famous painting, The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist. It is a breathtaking experience.
    • Upper Barrakka Gardens: A beautiful garden with a spectacular view of the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities (you’ll be looking down on them!). Arrive in time for the Saluting Battery (the cannon shot at noon!).
  • Quick and Authentic Lunch: Stop for a Pastizzi, the typical savory pastry, perhaps filled with ricotta or peas. It is the quintessential Maltese street food, affordable, and delicious!

Stop 2 (Afternoon: Villages and Tradition)

After lunch, it’s time to leave the capital and discover the true Maltese soul.

  • Mdina (The Silent City): Take a bus (they are efficient and cover the island well) or a taxi to Mdina. Also called the “Silent City” for its magical and almost surreal atmosphere, it is a medieval fortress on a hilltop. Walking through its narrow streets and honey-colored buildings is like taking a step back in time.
  • Rabat: Right next to Mdina, Rabat is famous for its Catacombs (like St. Paul’s) and its traditions. It’s the ideal place for an afternoon coffee.

Stop 3 (Evening: Local Life and Dinner)

  • The Three Cities (Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua): If you saw them from the Valletta gardens, now is the time to visit them! Take the dgħajsa (the traditional, colorful Maltese water-taxi!) to cross the harbour. These three historic cities are quieter and less touristy than Valletta.
  • Farewell Dinner: Choose a restaurant in Senglea or Vittoriosa, perhaps with a view of the illuminated Grand Harbour. Try a fresh fish dish or Fenek (rabbit, another Maltese specialty).

⏰ Departure and Return to Base

The next morning, after a quiet breakfast, you will need to head back to Valletta port for the return catamaran, likely the one departing between 9:00 and 11:00 AM.

Returning to Acquaduci is not just the end of a trip, but the well-deserved rest after an intense mini-adventure. You will be back in our apartment in time for lunch in Sicily and to enjoy our beloved terrace and home seafront, perhaps telling us all the details of your Maltese blitz!

We hope this itinerary has given you the inspiration to make the most of our fantastic base! It is proof that from Acquaduci, you not only experience the Sicilian sea, but you can also touch a piece of Mediterranean history!

A warm hug, and we look forward to your return, ready to welcome you with all our warmth!

And remember, if your friends are looking for a perfect base to explore Southeast Sicily and hop over to Malta, recommend our Acquaduci to them! We will be happy to take care of them.
