Welcome to our blog! We, Vincenzo and Agnese Super Host Acquaduci, love sharing the wonders of our territory. Among the many gems found a short distance from our holiday home, Marzamemi shines brightly. This village, which looks like it came straight out of a postcard, is not just a tourist destination, but a complete sensory experience that you absolutely must not miss.
Marzamemi is not just a town: it is a painting painted with the colors of the sea, warm sandstone, and the smell of saltiness and tuna. To help you experience it best, we have put together our three unmissable “emotions,” which will make you fall in love with this ancient fishing village!
The Origins of a Timeless Charm (Marzamemi: what to see)
Did you know that the name Marzamemi derives from the Arabic Marsà al-hamām, which means “port of the doves”? This is because the place was once an important stopover point for these migratory birds. Its charm is linked to its ancient Tonnara (tuna fishery), one of the most important in Sicily. Walking here is taking a journey back in time, among the low sandstone houses that once housed the fishermen and the tuna warehouses. Here are the three fundamental stops we advise you not to skip.
1. Taste: The Tonnara on a Plate (Bottarga and Red Tuna)
Marzamemi is synonymous with tuna fishing and fish delicacies. You cannot say you have visited the village without having tasted its most precious products, true gastronomic excellences born from the centuries-old tradition of the Tonnara.
- The Gastronomic Experience: The undisputed protagonist is the Red Tuna of the Mediterranean. We warmly invite you to try Red Tuna Bottarga (salted and dried roe), a treasure with an intense flavor, ideal grated over a simple pasta dish or tasted with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. Other specialties not to be missed are Mosciame (dried tuna) and Lattume (the male part of the bottarga), often used in appetizers. Another local excellence found here is the highly prized Pachino IGP Tomato, often processed into tasty local preserves.
- Where to Find Them: To ensure the highest quality, we recommend visiting the historic shops that have become true institutions, such as the renowned Campisi Conserve or Adelfio. You will find their sales points right near the piazza. They are not just shops: they are flavor laboratories where you can taste local products and discover ancient preservation techniques. They are also perfect for buying high-quality gastronomic souvenirs!
2. Live: Sunset Aperitivo in Piazza Regina Margherita
If gastronomy is the body of Marzamemi, Piazza Regina Margherita is its soul. It is the beating heart of the village, a natural amphitheater overlooking the sea, framed by the honey-colored fishermen’s houses and the two ancient palaces, including the Tonnara and the Villadorata Palace.
- The Emotional Experience: The magical and unmissable moment arrives at sunset. Find a spot in one of the many establishments that place tables right in the piazza or along the Balata pier (the small port). Order a fresh aperitivo, perhaps accompanied by local specialties like fish crostini, and enjoy the spectacle of the setting sun, illuminating the pastel colors of the moored boats. The atmosphere created here, between the soft lights and the murmur of conversations, is pure Sicilian poetry, perfect for concluding a day at the seaside.
- Where to Find It: The historic Taverna La Cialoma is a benchmark, with its blue and white wooden tables, but every establishment in the piazza or on the pier will offer you an enchanting view. An extra tip: also try the granita with brioche at one of the local bars! It’s a Sicilian classic that never gets old, especially on summer evenings.
3. Explore: Walking Among Legends and Colors
Marzamemi is much more than its piazzas and restaurants. It is famous for its picturesque corners that invite you to photograph every glimpse, where the blue of the sea meets the bright colors of the flowers on the balconies.
- The Cultural Experience: After eating, take a refreshing walk. We suggest you visit the ancient Tonnara, whose stone structures tell millenary stories of labor and the sea. Then, head towards the Molo San Francesco di Paola and look for the famous Vicolo delle Sirene (Mermaids’ Alley), one of the most suggestive and photographed places in the village, which suddenly opens up to the intense blue. Also admire the Isola Piccola (or Brancati islet), which adds a touch of mystery to the maritime panorama. The fishermen’s houses, all restored and carefully maintained, will make you feel immersed in another era.
- Where to Find Them: The entire area around Piazza Regina Margherita is pedestrian and easily explored on foot. Get lost in the narrow streets, observe the facades of the houses that were the ancient residences of the fishermen, and follow the scent of the sea that will guide you towards La Balata. Marzamemi is also an excellent base for boat excursions to the Island of Capo Passero or the Vendicari Reserve—an activity we highly recommend!
